125) McConnell, Joseph Carroll THE WEST TEXAS FRONTIER: A Descriptive History of Early Times in Western Texas VOLUMES 1 and 2. TWO VOLUME SET. VOLUME 1: 1933, 1st edition, Jacksboro. An excellent pioneer history of West Texas, beginning with Spanish explorations and colonization in the area; then descriptions of old frontier forts and military outposts; Indian reservations, French and Spanish activities. One section discusses early roads and overland transportation including military roads, the San Diego Mail and Old Butterfield routes, and others. One section gives descriptions and brief histories of the many counties that make up Texas’ western region including much of what is known today as Central Texas and the Hill Country. The last section begins extensive firsthand accounts of Indian fights, Indian depredations and raids on cattle ranches, with a lot of the material provided by personal interviews with old-time settlers and pioneers. 334pp with a number of very interesting old photographs. VOLUME 2: 1939, 1st edition, Palo Pinto This is the rarest of the two volumes, and it is an extension of the last section of the first volume, dealing almost exclusively with Indian fights, depredations and captivities on the West Texas frontier during the last half of the 19th century. Material in this volume came from old archives, and more interviews with old-timers. (Between the two volumes, there are descriptions of 823 Indian engagements with 505 of those accounts in this volume.) 348pp w/photos, index for both volumes.
